This blog will discuss a fireplace makeover featuring ledge stone. For this project we used Dutch Quality ledge stone. My clients had purchased a home with an existing two sided fireplace. Although the original fireplace was lovely in its time, time changes and so do peoples tastes. The homeowners loved the look of rustic stone and as seen in the before image below this fireplace was anything but rustic. It was the backside of a double sided fireplace which we had refreshed the brick on the living room side with a river rock stone veneer. Design Challenges
The fact that the fireplace was recessed into the wall posed some design challenges for the home owners, the Cultured Stoners designed an accent wall with the recessed fireplace as the main feature. We tore out the old moldings and tile and re-framed the wall in wood, metal studs and cement board pictured below.
The homeowners also wanted to incorporate a wood mantle above the fireplace. They did not want a full beam but still wanted something to put candles and nick knacks on. They also did not just want a thin shelf stuck on the wall either. We designed and built this rustic shelf/beam and installed it prior to the addition of the ledge stone stone veneer.
Finished Look of Fireplace Makeover
Corner pieces created the look of a recessed fireplace. A feature across the top completed the look. A raised hearth included in the design created an area to sit and warm up on a cold day. The home owners were thrilled with the end result as can be seen in the images below.
